Microsoft shifts Groove Music customers to Spotify

It was only two years ago that Microsoft rebranded its Xbox Music service to Groove Music.

Microsoft isn't the first major tech company to try, and then give up on competing with Spotify. From there, log into your Spotify account and select "Move music" to migrate your library over. "But the app will no longer stream or play Groove Music Pass content after December 31, 2017".

So while the Groove Music app isn't being killed off, not having the ability to stream, purchase, or download music from the Microsoft Store with it puts a big limitation on what the app can do.

Users of Groove Music Pass can easily move all their selected playlists and collections directly into Spotify from this week as Microsoft is partnering with Spotify.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Spotify are the two heavyweights in music streaming, collectively commanding almost 100 million paid subscribers at this point.

Microsoft isn't presenting any new music benefit; rather, the organization is exchanging existing Groove clients to Spotify. There were sightings previous year of a "Groove Music Maker" application, which could be similar to Apple's Garage Band.

As The Verge notes, this is a boon to Spotify, although it remains uncertain just how many Groove Music users there still are. Playlists and music collections can be directly transferred to Spotify, and Groove customers will be eligible to receive a free trial of Spotify Premium that's good for 60 days. The new name was taken from the new default music player included with Windows 10, named Groove.

Microsoft is discontinuing Groove Music Pass, its streaming music service, on December 31st.
