Israel Retaliates for Rocket Fired from Gaza that didn't Make It Out

Two unarmed Palestinian men were detained by the Israel Defense Force (IDF) after illegally crossing from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Sunday amid heightened tensions along the border.

Both men were apprehended and taken for interrogation.

The Israeli army spokesperson said, on Twitter, that a tank targeted the outpost in response to a rocket that was sacked from Gaza earlier in the evening, which landed in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council of southern Israel and caused no injuries or damages.

Col. Fares Attila, the head of the ministry's Coordination and Liaison Department, which oversees movement to and from the Gaza Strip, decried the smuggling attempt as an attempt by "the Hamas terrorist group to take advantage of the Israeli policies toward the residents of the Strip".

"Army-owned tanks hit a military base of Hamas in the southern side of the Gaza Strip", the statement by the Israeli Army said. Earlier on Sunday night, the military had said a rocket fell in an open area in the Eshkol region of southern Israel.

It is the first rocket fire from Gaza in about two months.

Some have carried out sporadic rocket attacks into Israel in defiance of an informal truce agreed by Hamas.

Meanwhile, Hamas has held a number of Fatah members in Gaza on grounds of carrying out attacks in Gaza to cause security chaos. Since the beginning of the Palestinian internal split between Gaza and the West Bank, or Hamas and Fatah, they had so far failed to end their split and achieve full reconciliation.
