Woman shot dead by officer after slamming auto into cop

Witnesses said the woman was behind the wheel of a black BMW early Sunday evening around 6 p.m. when she crashed into a truck on 12th Street and Ocean Drive.

The Miami Beach Police Department said an officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital as a result of the crash, but the officer's condition was unknown. During her attempt to escape, she hit a uniform patrol officer who was dealing with bystanders. The mortally wounded driver then lost control of her auto and struck another vehicle. She was treated at the scene and transported to hospital, where she later died.

Police said they are investigating what precipitated the incident.

The officer struck was thrown onto the sidewalk from the force of the impact.

No other details were immediately released.

Shay Davis and Monique Teller saw the woman's auto ram into the back of a work truck that had stopped for traffic.

The Miami-Dade Police Department, an outside agency, is being brought in to conduct the investigation.

The area remained an active scene Sunday night with several blocks near Collins Avenue and 12th Street closed.

Garcia said when he saw the woman's face, she had a wild, crazed expression. Garcia said he and several others followed the female driver on foot as she drove away. Visitors were being told it could be hours before they could get to their cars parked on the street.

The auto came to a halt on 12th Street near Washington Avenue and also struck an SUV.
