Veteran steals truck, transports dozens to hospital after Las Vegas shooting

Lindsay Padgett was attending the Jason Aldean concert at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival with her fiance, Mike Jay, when she heard popping sounds that she initially thought were pyrotechnics.

That's when he saw a group of white service trucks - and the first one he checked had keys.

The Route 91 Harvest country music festival became the scene of the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock sprayed a crowd of 22,000 with automatic gunfire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Casino before turning a gun on himself. Fifty-nine people died and more than 500 were injured. "Then everyone starts yelling, 'Get on the ground! get on the ground!'"

"We saw everyone being shot left and right", she said.

Unable to leave because they were so close to the front where it was packed with concertgoers, she and her friends huddled together on top of one another, not sure what to do.

Padgett was able to safely run from the scene with her friends and fiance. Winston and Lewis spotted a truck that still had its keys inside of it, so the pair swiped it and began taking the grievously injured to the hospital. "May we all unite to help those injured and less fortunate rebound as quickly as possible", wrote Kevin Blue.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters that Danley is likely in the Philippines and remains a person of interest in the case. Two days later, six Federal Bureau of Investigation agents located Paddock near a gas station in downtown Las Vegas .

"People started scattering and screaming and that's when we knew something real was happening", Winston told CBS This Morning. "They were pretty limp when we were pulling them out of the truck, but they still had a pulse, so I'm hoping for the best".

"We were trying to get to the nearest hospital but the roads were blocked off", she says.

"We started grabbing people and loading them in the truck", Winston said, telling the newspaper he was aided by a friend.

The attack took place around 9:30pm when the BJP workers were decorating a part of the National Highway 66 for the march. As many as 120 BJP workers, 84 in Kannur alone, have been killed in the state since 2001.

He and others including a trauma nurse set up a makeshift triage outside the concert so they could assess who needed treatment the most urgently. "The paramedics said to take him out right away".

Winston told KGTV he looked for victims with the most serious injuries first, loaded them into the truck bed and drove them to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center. Among the other victims in her truck, Padgett said, one man suffered a bullet to the chest, and one girl was shot in the leg.

When they arrived to a hospital, she and Jay helped the victims inside.
