Rangana Herath becomes first left-arm spinner to pick 400 Test wickets

Rangana Herath, the ageless wonder from Sri Lanka assumed centre stage all over again as he scalped 6 wickets for just 43 runs as Pakistan were dismantled for 114 runs in their second essay.

The only one of these spells to be delivered by Rangana Herath 1.0 - before his 2009 renaissance - and the only one to have come in Pakistan, it was the carrom ball that was Herath's primary weapon as he bowled Sri Lanka to victory.

Sri Lanka opener Karunaratne had helped rescue his side from 61 for three before a mix-up with Dinesh Chandimal saw him sent him packing after a fourth-wicket stand of 100.

All it did, as it turned out, was delay both the inevitable defeat for Pakistan, as well as Herath becoming the first left-arm spinner to take 400 wickets in Tests.

The potential outcomes are numerous, including the very real possibility that the unity talks will once again fail. But the movement's armed wing remains the dominant power in the Palestinian enclave of two million people.

Herath's place in the history books was the final action of the match, sparking wild celebrations from a Sri Lanka side who exorcised some of the demons of their India misery. He has taken 95 wickets against them and needs five more to go past Kapil Dev to become the highest wicket-taker against Pakistan in Tests. We were surprised, but we thought before play started today that 160-plus would be a winning total. A cautious Ali made sure Pakistan do not concede a big lead in the first innings, having hit only one boundary in his 26th Test half century.

There was a moment in the final moments of the game when it looked like Sri Lanka had pulled it off when Yasir Shah nicked it to short leg off Dilruwan Perera and Sri Lanka erupted in celebrations. He grafted for 34 runs from 69 deliveries and his dismissal left Pakistan needing 38 runs with three wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka scored 419 runs in the 1st innings, to which Pakistan replied with 422 runs, leading into the 2nd innings on Day 4 by 3 runs.

Replying to a question by Geo News, Arthur stated that Pakistan had needed only one stable partnership to reach the target. The veteran responded, "I have no idea".

"The guys gave hard work before the match started, and finally that hard work paid off", Chandimal said.

"Dickwella was outstanding in the second innings to get us to the 138 mark". "We all know Pakistan are a very good team". England's Johnny Briggs had also taken seven five-fors against Australia, although he played 31 matches - to Herath's 20 - against them.

Batsmen needed to spend time in the middle to score but nearly all of them lacked intent and hunger to do so.

"I am really proud of this achievement", Herath said.
