Three storms raging in Atlantic - with one aiming for Irma's path

Hurricane Maria grew into a Category 3 storm overnight as it barrelled toward a potentially devastating collision with islands in the eastern Caribbean. Once it forms into a cyclone, this will be Tropical Storm or Hurricane Maria.

This is why a tropical storm watch was issued from DE to Sandy Hook, N.J., and from East Rockaway Inlet, N.Y., to Plymouth, Mass. By Monday, it is expected to turn into a hurricane and will be a major hurricane on Wednesday, September 20, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Showers are likely, with up to an inch of rain possible.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have had hurricane watches issued. Maria was about 145 km north-northeast of Barbados and about 270 km east-southeast of Dominica, the US-based National Hurricane Center said. These areas are some that were ravaged by Irma just a few days ago.

The effects of Maria could already be felt Sunday night in the Lesser Antilles. There are also regular video updates on these storms from our First Alert Weather team. In fact, there are a number of tropical storm warnings and watches that have been issued ahead of this storm. Jose is located about 335 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Mattis told reporters that he believed diplomacy and sanctions were so far succeeding in putting more pressure on Pyongyang. The China Daily yesterday said that sanctions should be given time to bite and that the door must be left open to talks.

The storm's sustained winds are 75 mph and Jose is moving north at 7 mph, slightly slower than it was traveling three hours earlier.

The eye of Jose, with top sustained winds of 90 miles (150 km) per hour, should remain off the U.S. east coast, the NHC said.

If Jose continued on its path, the most immediate effect could be high surf and beach erosion along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts, Masters said. However, Hurricane Jose is a large cyclone and is expected to have direct impacts in the areas mentioned.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Jose has gained some strength but remains a Category 1 hurricane with no effective watches or warnings associated with it.

The forecast track shows Maria could approach the Dominican Republic Thursday. Some weakening was expected, and Norma was expected to become a tropical depression by late Monday or Tuesday.
