German First World War submarine wreck discovered with 23 crewmen still onboard

A well-preserved WWI U-boat has been found off the coast of Belgium.


The wreck of a World War I German U-boat, possibly still containing the bodies of its lost crew, has been discovered off the Belgian coast.

It is not clear which of the known 11 wrecks of German submarines has been found, but "Of the 11 downed U-boats in Belgian waters, this one is the best preserved example", the province said, Reuters reported.

"This is totally unique", governor of West Flanders Carl Decaluwe said.

"The impact damage was at the front, but the submarine remains closed and there are 23 people still onboard." he added.

UB-II submarines were built in 1915 and 1916 and were able to dive to a depth of around 50m. It was found lying at a 45-degree angle, around 30 metres underwater. Just 88 feet long, the submarines had a crew of 23, carried six torpedoes, and were armed with a 88-millimeter deck gun.

"The submarine is very intact, everything is still closed - that's what he (Termote) saw during his first visit this summer", Jan Mees, head of the Flanders Marine Institute told AFP.

The first indications of the wreck came in 2015 when a sonar ship found signs of a large wreck off Ostend in 2015.

The vessel appears to have been encrusted with barnacles and seaweed.
