After Irma, Caribbean in the sights of another major hurricane

To the north, Hurricane Jose stirred up unsafe surf and rip currents along the U.S. East Coast, though forecasters said the storm was unlikely to make landfall.

The British Virgin Islands and St. Martin, which was devastated by Hurricane Irma, were under a hurricane watch, as were the U.S. Virgin Islands and Anguilla.

Hurricane warnings were posted for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Martinique and St. Lucia.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in a Miami has warned interests elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico to monitor the progress of the system, and additional tropical storm or hurricane watches and warnings will likely be issued tonight or tomorrow. It was centered about 120 miles (195 kilometers) east-southeast of Dominica - or 85 miles (135 kilometers) east of Martinique - and heading west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph).

Jose sits approximately 420 miles from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and continues to head in a northerly direction at roughly 8 miles an hour.

The islands of the eastern Caribbean prepared Sunday to face another potential disaster, with forecasters saying newly formed and strengthening Hurricane Maria was headed for a hit on the Leeward Islands by Monday night.

You'll probably also want to make sure your device is plugged in and charging so the update doesn't completely drain your battery. The title pretty much sums it up - if you're rocking an iPhone 5 or an older one, then no, you shouldn't keep your hopes up.

The eye of the storm is expected to pass over the Leeward Islands during Monday afternoon or evening.

Hurricane Jose is expected to bring rough seas and unsafe rip currents to New Jersey and Long Island's shorelines early this week.

Swells generated by Maria are already beginning to affect the Lesser Antilles.

In the United States, hurricane Maria rose in power today to become an risky Category Four storm.

Rosselló said that Maria's size means all of Puerto Rico will experience hurricane conditions.

That storm, one of the most powerful ever recorded in the Atlantic with winds up to 185 miles per hour (298 kph), killed at least 84 people, more than half of them in the Caribbean. A police official on the island, Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste, said late Monday night that there were no immediate reports of casualties but it was too risky for officers to check conditions. Hurricane and tropical storm watches, which are issued when storm conditions are possible but not necessarily expected, remain in place across several Caribbean island nations.

Mattis told reporters that he believed diplomacy and sanctions were so far succeeding in putting more pressure on Pyongyang. The China Daily yesterday said that sanctions should be given time to bite and that the door must be left open to talks.

Hurricane Jose has sped up its northward trek with no change in strength but remains far from land as it generates powerful swells affecting coastal areas in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the US southeast. There have been four major storms this hurricane season.

Maximum sustained winds are near 65 miles per hour (100 km/h) with higher gusts. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jose is one of three named storms now active in the Atlantic.

Parts of the central and southern Leeward Islands could see as much as 20 inches (51 cm) of rain, according to meteorologists.

Even so, by Tuesday it could bring tropical storm conditions from Fenwick Island, Delaware, to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and from East Rockaway Inlet on New York's Long Island to the MA island of Nantucket.
