Anna Nordqvist outlasts Brittany Altomare in playoff at rain-shortened Evian Championship

The 2009 LPGA Championship victor, who battled glandular fever (mononucleosis) this summer, outlasted third-year-pro Altomare under borderline-unplayable conditions similar to those on Thursday that forced the LPGA to reduce the tourney to 54 holes.

"I mean, golf is amusing; I wasn't expecting it for sure, but yeah, I kind of surprised myself even, and certainly since then, it's just, yeah, been nice".

Katherine Kirk is one further back after the Australian staged a gallant recovery from being two over after eight holes, following a birdie at nine with gains at 13, 16 and 17 to return a creditable 69. She was administered a two-shot penalty during last year's playoff at the U.S. Women's Open after video review showed she'd grounded her club in a bunker on an approach shot.

In the end the LPGA history was made by Nordqvist - who has suffered with glandular fever for three months of the summer - as she became the first European female golfer to win a major since 2009.

In comparison, Jutanugarn and Ko could only manage third-round scores of one-over and two-under, respectively, and were unable to withstand the pressure as they just missed out on playoff berths. "I just keep trying". It looks like it's plenty of good chances out there today. I'm really happy for her.

Kirk turned a long run of disappointment around this year with a win in Wisconsin her first since 2010 and talked about just what that win meant to her. It would also be the third time this season, joining Danielle Kang (Women's PGA Championship) and Park. Nordqvist is the 10th different major victor in the last two seasons.

Nordqvist, who was sidelined for much of July and August with a bout of mononucleosis, is finally feeling mostly healthy.

"She said don't get caring about what happened previous year or what's the difference".

"But now I think I'll play a few more years".

Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot 3-under 68 to lead in the Evian Championship second round on Saturday, and could join her younger sister Ariya in the golf majors record book.

"I chipped in for birdie at the first hole, so that was a good start", she said.

A pack of major champions will be chasing from three- strokes back.

American Paula Creamer was forced to withdraw on Friday with a sprained tendon in her left wrist.
