Eight die at nursing home that had poor record with state regulators

Hurricane Irma claimed eight more lives, including six patients at a Florida nursing home that lost power, authorities said on Wednesday, as millions struggled without electricity and residents trickled back to the devastated Florida Keys.

The facility was is just one of almost 700 nursing homes across the state, about 150 of which still lacked power as of Wednesday morning when the Hollywood Hills crisis occurred, according to the Florida Health Care Association.

Officials initially said as many as 158 people had been moved from the center; on Thursday, police clarified that 145 patients were sent to Memorial Regional Hospital - 141 from the center and four from an adjoining facility.

The number of deaths blamed on Irma in Florida has climbed to 12, in addition to four in SC and two in Georgia. Sharief confirmed during a news conference that three residents died at the center and two died at the hospital.

Operation Sentinel was launched after the Paris attacks , which claimed 130 lives in the French capital in November 2015. The man reportedly shouted references to the Islamic State group while attacking the soldier and was quickly arrested.

Rescue crews were called to the nursing home around 4 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The first occurred Tuesday at the facility; that individual had a "do not resuscitate" order and the deceased was transferred to a funeral home, but authorities have now retrieved the body.

One would think that the bad photo of nursing-home residents in Houston, left to languish in waist-high water after Hurricane Harvey, would have made every facility in Florida cringe - and come up with a Plan A, B and C as Irma approached. It said it has "flagged" facilities without power to the Agency for Health Care Administration so utilities can prioritize locations with the greatest needs. I never even knew a Category 5 existed.

But the needless and tragic deaths of eight elderly people Wednesday after apparently being left in sweltering temperatures in a nursing home/rehabilitation center has shocked South Florida and with good reason. That patient was transported to a hospital, police said.

A kitchen worker at the center told the Miami Herald that the facility "had power from a generator to cook meals, but no air conditioning". State healthcare records list Michel as an officer and board member of the nursing home, with a controlling interest. The website includes a federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services report that said a health inspection was conducted by the state March 31 and found a series of deficiencies at the facility. Also, information released by the state said 44 nursing homes were evacuated or closed.

"I don't know if my sister is living", Mitchell said. "Potentially" more people could die, he said.

And on Thursday in Florida, before his comments aboard Air Force One about climate change, Trump said the people of Florida experienced something "the likes of which we can say really say nobody's ever seen before". "Generally, we are treating dehydration, heat exhaustion and severe respiratory conditions, and we do have some critical patients". "If they find that anyone wasn't acting in the best interests of their patients, we will hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law", the governor said.

The nursing home has a history of safety violations and citations, including two for not following generator regulations in 2014 and 2016. Hours later, 79 residents from the Krystal Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Miami Beach were evacuated to another facility because of the heat.
