Rare White Giraffes Spotted in Kenya, Captured on Camera for First Time

Bashir, a local community ranger, shared, "This is new to us". The reticulated giraffes are a mother and child and suffer from a genetic condition known as leucism which restrains pigmentation in skin cells.

Local residents who spotted the white giraffes tipped conservationists who saw the majestic duo in the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy in Kenya's Garissa County.

"They were so close and extremely calm and seemed not disturbed by our presence", the post states.

The mother paces back and forth, signaling to her baby to hide in the trees.

While observing the magnificent long necked animal looking at us, I could not but help see the fading reticulates on their skin!

It's only the third sighting of a white giraffe. A white giraffe was spotted near the same Kenyan conservancy in March 2016, near where the mother and calf were seen in May.

Following three white giraffe sightings in Africa in two years, the Hirola Conservation Program says it could mean white giraffes will become an increasingly common sight.

First spotted in Tanzania in April 2015, several sightings have been made since, all in Kenya and Tanzania. But the question that lingers in the minds of many is, is the giraffe white or what's up with its coloration?

According to the blog, the native people in the surrounding communities don't remember seeing any white giraffes until recently, and added they are unsure whether changes in the environmental conditions or something else may be causing the condition.

Rangers first heard about the white giraffes from local villagers and rushed to get their own glimpse of the majestic beasts. "It must be very recent and we are not sure what is causing it" he said.
