Louisiana State University officials say campus police are investigating a student's death as a possible fraternity hazing incident.

"As we have continually warned over and over again, hazing is unsafe, irresponsible, and unacceptable, and it won't be tolerated at LSU, period", Alexander said.

East Baton Rouge Coroner Beau Clark says 18-year-old Maxwell Gruver passed away at a hospital after he was transported there from campus.

The Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters also is investigating the incident and the fraternity, and has suspended the frat's operations while the investigation is underway.

Alexander stressed that hazing will not be tolerated at LSU.

Alexander described Gruver's death as "tragic and untimely".

"We are investigating this matter with the utmost seriousness".

But over 70 percent want a referendum to take place to settle the matter, similar to the plebiscite held in Scotland in 2014. Later on Wednesday, the Catalan government's website for information on the vote, referendum.cat, was taken offline.


An autopsy was planned for Friday morning. Gruver's Facebook page indicates that he is from Roswell, Georgia and now studying at LSU. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
