Lost Interest in Sex? This Could Help

Women who reported having three or more partners in the a year ago were less likely to be interested in sex, and having children under five or not sharing a partner's sexual preferences was also found to be important.

Women who lived with a partner were also more at risk of having a low sex drive, and were twice as likely to report a lack of interest in sex than their male counterparts.

Only 11 percent of men aged 16 to 24 said they were disinterested in sex, compared to 17 percent among 25 to 34-year-olds.

Those who had difficulties in the bedroom, and those who were unhappy in their relationships were more likely to say that they had lost interest in sex, the researchers said. However, she noted that discussing it is "often what you can do to improve your sex life".

But they did find that having young children at home was a factor for women. For both sexes, poor physical and mental health, poor communication and a lack of emotional connection during sex can cause sexual desire to dwindle.

The researchers found interest in sex gradually declined with age among women, with 25 percent of 11 to 24-year-olds saying they were uninterested in sex, a rate that rose to 39 percent among 55 to 64-year-olds.

Professor Graham, who teaches sexual and reproductive health at the University, said the findings had increased understanding of what lay behind men's and women's lack of desire for sex and how to treat it.

Graham also explained that the study highlights the need to assess and, if necessary, treat sexual interest problems in relationships in a holistic, gender-specific way that goes beyond drugs.
