United Kingdom lawmakers back government's proposed timetable for debate of European Union withdrawal bill

United Kingdom lawmakers back government's proposed timetable for debate of European Union withdrawal bill

To avoid the chaos of having years of European Union laws just disappear, the Withdrawal Bill would convert them into British law when Brexit happens.

The legislation repeals the 1972 Bill which brought Britain into the European Economic Community and translates all EU rules into British laws.

The UK has the largest defence budget in the European Union and, along with France, is one of only two countries in the bloc with permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.

The bill is aimed at overturning the 1972 European Communities Act, which took the United Kingdom into the then European Economic Community (EEC).

Whether people voted to Leave or to Remain, they did not vote for government ministers to give themselves unaccountable powers over huge swathes of legislation - but that is what the EU Withdrawal Bill does.

May's Conservative government secured parliamentary approval for the bill thanks to its alliance with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

He said the UK's commitment to European security was "undiminished".

The government claims it needs the power to be able to make minor technical changes to ensure a smooth transition. The opposition voiced concern that ministers would get sweeping powers to make changes to laws during this process by avoiding parliamentary scrutiny.

The bill was put forward by Commons leader and one-time Prime Ministerial candidate Andrea Leadsom.

The Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson, Tom Brake, said MPs who backed the bill should feel "ashamed".

British lawmakers on Tuesday voted in favor of the government's proposed timetable for debating legislation created to sever political, financial and legal ties with the European Union.

The Government is also offering to agree joint foreign policy positions with Brussels, including co-operating on global sanctions against states or terrorist organisations.

Britain and the European Commission have "jointly agreed" to postpone the next round of Brexit negotiations by a week, the UK's Department for Exiting the European Union has said.

Another source said Britain asked for the delay to let May set out London's latest views and plans on Brexit before more negotiations.
