McCain to North Korea: Aggression will lead to 'extinction'

North Korea on Tuesday blasted "vicious" sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council over its latest and most powerful nuclear test, threatening revenge against Washington, who it blamed for leading the charge.

Western diplomats considered the vote to be a win for worldwide unity in the face of North Korea's provocations and pointed out that it represented the harshest sanctions regime imposed on the state to date.

It is the ninth Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on North Korea, whose nuclear and ballistic missile tests violate previous Security Council directives.

"We do not take pleasure in further strengthening sanctions today".

The resolution was passed by the UN Security Council in an anonymous vote.

The United States called for a vote Monday on new U.N. sanctions against North Korea, though exactly what measures would be in the resolution remained a mystery.

In a statement on a possible ramping up of sanctions, North Korea's foreign ministry promised moves that would "cause the USA the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history".
