About half of DeKalb County lost power due to Hurricane Irma

As the weather deteriorated Monday, companies like Georgia Power pulled crews from the field due to hazards involving falling trees, according to Georgia Power Spokesperson John Kraft.

To expedite repairs throughout the state, Georgia Power is responding to the outages with approximately 5,500 personnel from the company, other Southern Company operating companies and assisting utilities. Damage assessment and restoration efforts started in earnest once weather conditions allowed following the storm and, by Tuesday night, more than 60 percent (590,000 customers) of Georgia Power customers impacted by the hurricane had service restored.

Customers are urged to avoid all downed power lines and remember that risky electrical currents can travel through standing water and wet soil.

Everyone without electricity wants to know when power will be restored but utility companies report they are making progress Wednesday morning.

All of Georgia Power's resources are being held and dedicated to storm restoration efforts in the state following Hurricane Irma and the company continues to work to procure additional resources as they become available.

Georgia EMC's district engineering coordinator Bennie Bagwell said they're hoping to have all their power restored by Thursday. Council members cited safety, aesthetics and reliability, as underground lines would not be subject to falling trees knocking out power during storms such as Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Matthew past year.
