Woman Shot Homeless Man Who Asked Her To Move Her Porsche

Katie Layne Quackenbush, 26, has been charged with attempted murder for the August 26 shooting of 54-year-old Gerald Melton, who remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries.

Katie Quackenbush, a single parent to a 5-year-old kid, had driven a companion back to her auto when the ladies apparently observed Melton irritating other ladies in the road close-by, Jesse said.

Police say Melton was disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music coming from Quackenbush's Porsche while trying to sleep at 3 a.m., so he asked her to move the vehicle.

"Melton said he asked the driver of the Porsche, alleged to have been Quackenbush, to move the vehicle", police wrote.

The woman's father Jesse Quakenbush told the newspaper that his daughter and her firend were being accosted by bthe homeless man when she opened fire.

Melton was hospitalized in critical condition after sustaining injuries to his abdomen.

"She didn't try to kill this guy", he old the Tennessean after her arrest. "She had no intention of killing him".

Melton revealed that the shooter got once again into the Porsche and left the scene.

He claims she had no idea Melton had been hit by the gunfire.

"He comes up to their window and begins shouting in their window different dangers, and something about turning their music down and that he couldn't rest", Jesse said. When Melton walked away, Quackenbush escorted her friend from the Porsche, bringing her firearm with her for safety.

Quackenbush is being held on a $25,000 bond. "She did say she closed her eyes when she shot both times, but they were warnings, and she thought she pointed away from him".

'She ran back to the vehicle and left with her friend, ' her father said.

Jesse said his daughter obtained an attorney and eventually turned herself in for questioning by police.

The pair then went to a restaurant to have breakfast and Quackenbush 'kept her composure probably better than any police officer would have, ' her father said.

He believes she is being unfairly prosecuted and that authorities are intentionally ignoring any threat Melton may have posed.

Quackenbush, who eventually turned herself in, is slated to appear in court October 6.
