When people think about hurricanes, they tend to think more about the dangers related to powerful winds, and less about the dangers of rising, fast-moving waters.

"As the center of the circulation gets closer to us and we get these rain bands, a lot more of us now are getting close to and above tropical storm force [wind gusts] and it is only going to get faster", said Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Leigh Spann.

Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane in the tropical Atlantic (7.5-20 degrees North, 60-20 degrees West) since Hugo in 1989.
