United Nations strengthens sanctions against N. Korea

The Post cites US court documents that describe a web of "front companies" formed by Russian citizens to specifically hide deals with North Korea.

"The measures that will be taken will cause the United States the greatest suffering and pain in their entire history", the ministry said.

Professor Joseph DeThomas of Pennsylvania State University, a former USA ambassador and State Department official who dealt with North Korea, said on Friday that the US demand for quick council action was 'an indicator of how the administration thinks time has run out'. The growing power of North Korea's nuclear arsenal should worry American policymakers and analysts to a degree, but concern over the sixth nuclear test should be placed in a broader, and more worrying, perspective. North Korean textile exports in 2016 totalled $752.5 million, accounting for about one-fourth of its total $3 billion in merchandise exports, according to South Korean government figures.

The resolution was not as severe as the U.S. originally wanted - with no oil import ban or worldwide asset freeze on the government and leader Kim Jong Un.

Four analysts have rated the stock with a hold recommendation and three have assigned a buy recommendation to the company. The stock of Barrick Gold Corp (USA ) (NYSE: ABX ) has "Hold" rating given on Tuesday, May 3 by Canaccord Genuity.

It also bans all textile exports and prohibits all countries from authorising new work permits for North Korean workers. It said the US would pay a heavy price if the sanctions proposed by Washington are adopted.

Britain and France - permanent veto-wielding Security Council members along with the US, China and Russian Federation - have given Washington their strong backing.

Rycroft called the resolution "a very significant set of additional sanctions", declaring that "we are tightening the screw, and we stand prepared to tighten it further".

"The North Korean nuclear issue remains the biggest challenge on our foreign affairs and security front and most likely will continue to be so for many years to come", Kang said to reporters at the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' Club at the Press Center in central Seoul.

Korea says it needs nuclear weapons to protect itself, but the United States accuses Pyongyang of "begging for war". The US official said the ban on textile exports would deprive North Korea of some $726 million in annual revenue.

As more and more technical milestones are reached, the more difficult it will be for the United States to slow down North Korea's program and the harder it will be for the United States to get what it wants in negotiations with Pyongyang in the future.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement that the unanimous adoption of the sanctions showed the global community is "united against the illegal and reckless acts by the North Korean regime".

A North Korean thermonuclear weapon is not a true "game changer" because it does not change the nature of the United States' problem.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi again called for talks "sooner rather than later".

Facebook confirmed that a small group of Android users have been provided with access to its new Instant Video feature. Instant Videos could help Facebook skirt spotty cellular networks.

The latest resolution contained new political language urging "further work to reduce tensions so as to advance the prospects for a comprehensive settlement". It retains language reaffirming support for long-stalled six-party talks with that goal involving North Korea, the U.S., Russia, China, Japan and South Korea.
