UN Body Expresses Dismay Over Human Rights Issues in India

Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday called Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi a "cruel woman" over a lack of inaction against violence against the ethnic Rohingya Muslims in the country, Iranian media reported. The UN estimates that some 290,000 Rohingya Muslims have crossed into Bangladesh over the past two weeks alone.

"It's a sign of the significant worry that Security Council members have that the situation is continuing to deteriorate for many Rohingya who are seeking to flee Rakhine state in Burma and move into Bangladesh", Rycroft said.

But many of those who have fled say troops responded to attacks by Rohingya militants on 25 August with a brutal campaign of violence and village burnings aimed at driving them out.

It called on Myanmar to "reciprocate this humanitarian pause" in fighting.

As well as Rohingya, some 27,000 ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Hindus have also fled violence in the north of Rakhine state. The predominantly Buddhist Myanmar considers them Bangladeshi but Bangladesh says they are from Myanmar, CNN reported.

On the issue of Rohingya Muslims, the UNHRC High Commissioner said, "I deplore current measures in India to deport Rohingyas at a time of such violence against them in their country".

At least 313,000 Muslim Rohingya have fled across the border to Bangladesh since fighting broke out on August 25, according to the Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) in Bangladesh, which represents United Nations and aid agencies.

Speaking as she visited a refugee camp, Sheikh Hasina urged Myanmar to view the situation with humanity, saying innocent people were suffering.

"I appeal to you and your fellow leaders to reach out to all sections of society to try to restore friendly relations throughout the population in a spirit of peace and reconciliation", said in a letter to Myanmar's disgraced Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

He was also part of a legal team that argued that Americans don't have the right to use sex toys. A conservative senator in the U.S. has been caught "liking" a pornography post on Twitter .

He said he was particularly "appalled" by reports that the Myanmar authorities had begun laying landmines along the border with Bangladesh to prevent those who fled from returning. Yet despite their generosity, refugee camps are steadily filling up and newly arrived people are forced to sleep rough upon whatever ground they can find.

"The massive displacement and victimization of people, including large numbers of the ethnic Rohingya community and other minorities, shows that Burmese security forces are not protecting civilians", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar has said the latest violence may have left more than 1,000 dead, a lot of them Rohingya.

On August 25, Rohingya militants killed 12 security officers in co-ordinated attacks on border posts, according to Myanmar's state media.
