Some of these matches will compete head-on with BT Group Plc's coverage of European Champions League games.

In addition, and in what is another first for English football, the EFL will be offering its Clubs the opportunity to live-stream in the United Kingdom and Ireland any league match via their respective iFollow (or equivalent) service that takes place outside the blocked hours of 14.45-17.15 on Saturday afternoons and that is not broadcast live on Sky Sports.

"This deal helps the EFL think about how to go direct to the consumer and it also gives the clubs more money", said Ian Whittaker, an analyst at Liberum.

The new deal is effective from the start of the 2019/2020 season and will see Sky Sports exclusively show up to 183 matches each year in the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One, Sky Bet League Two, Carabao Cup and Checkatrade Trophy.

Under the terms of the arrangement, Sky will show every midweek Championship game live - some 80 fixtures - on its interactive service beginning from next season.

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, described the deal as "great news for EFL fans and our viewers".

"Viewing of live EFL games grew by 12 percent year-on-year last season and is up a further 7 percent so far this season".

Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of the EFL, added that Sky Sports is a "hugely important and valued partner".

All EFL clubs will be able to stream midweek league games via their websites if Sky are not broadcasting them live.
