Qualcomm Tease Apple: Android Always First To New Features

Qualcomm has shared more than 20 examples to make the case for how Android smartphone makers have been the first ones to introduce new features. Earlier this year, Apple sued the chipmaker for roughly $1 billion claiming that Qualcomm has been "charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with". The list shows all the technical firsts that have been made on the Android platform, with majority aided by Qualcomm's technical prowess.

Now, it's now at all hard to interpret Qualcomm's aggressive move to dampen Apple's iPhone product launch due to happen in the course of a few hours.

Apple uses modems from both Intel and Qualcomm in iPhones but reportedly decided, for consistency's sake, not to enable Gigabit LTE in iPhones with Qualcomm's modem until Intel chips have the same capability. Other notable mentions are Gigabit LTE (Samsung Galaxy S8) and Bluetooth v5.0 (everything running the Snapdragon 835 SoC).

As for augmented reality, Qualcomm points to Lenovo's Phab Pro 2, which supported Google's Tango platform, as a first. It has pioneered in making the Xperia Z4 as the first smartphone with water resistant touchscreen and Xiaomi Mi MIX as the first bezel-less phone. Overall, Qualcomm's post could have been a bit more researched, even if its meant to point out Apple's late but refined entry to the party. Qualcomm is one company who has been in legal disputes over technological patents with Apple, which is why they did their part in dampening the hype around the next iPhone. "The vibrant Android ecosystem is built on Qualcomm inventions and our industry enabling horizontal model".

The new iPhone will grab the spotlight, but Apple's other moves are even more interesting. Dual cameras? Well yes, it was an Android first - but we're pretty sure the HTC One M7 had a single camera.
