But by the time it rolled through in the middle of the night Monday, it was down to a moderate Category 2, with winds around 100 miles per hour or less. Forecasters had expected the center of the storm to strike the Miami area, but now the path has shifted west to Tampa.

The Tampa-St Petersburg area, with a population of about three million, has not taken a direct hit from a major hurricane since 1921.

Hurricane force winds are expected to continue this morning across south Florida as Irma moves northward.

Irma - at one time the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic - left more than 20 people dead across the Caribbean. From there it is predicted to steam inland Sunday afternoon over the highly populated Tampa Bay region.
