Switzerland: Two Trains Collide in Andermatt, 30 Persons Injured

An accident on a popular Swiss tourist railway route left almost 30 people injured on Monday at the Andermatt station, a police spokeswoman said.

Police and paramedics are now on the scene along with firefighters.

The crash occured at a train station in Andermatt, a mountain village and municipality in the canton of Uri.

Spokeswoman Sonja Aschwanden of the Uri cantonal police said she did not have any immediate information about the type of injuries or material damage.

The regional police and the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident occurred at around 11.30am and involved a train from the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, the rail company said in a statement.

He noted that the situation could not be fully assessed because Myanmar had refused access to human rights investigators. They are residents of Khoyarbil village of Rachhidong of Rakhine state.

Around 100 passengers were on one of the trains when the two came together at the station.
