Volkswagen reveals electric microbus

VOLKSWAGEN HAS CONFIRMED its I.D. Buzz concept auto will become the brand's first full-electric van and will go on-sale in 2022.

Volkswagen (vlkpf) has announced that it will produce an electric version of its Microbus, the iconic, bug-eyed "hippy bus" most often associated with free-wheeling road trips to Woodstock.

The VW van will return sometime in the next two years, as the I.D. Buzz.

The microbus is one of America's most beloved vehicles. With all these American retro vibes among young adults, Volkswagen chose to relaunch an improved and electric version of the microbus, promoting road trips in old-school vehicles under the under the hashtag #vanlife. Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess outlined a plan to bring the Buzz to North American, European, and Chinese markets.

The 2022 VW Microbus will be based on VW's new electric modular platform, which is set to hold up VW's electric lineup starting with a hatchback in 2020. And the company said it would make a commercial van version of the vehicle called the I.D. Buzz Cargo, which would compete in a flourishing segment against models such as the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster.
