Kashmiri boys in spot for breaking anthem law

Three engineering students, originally from Jammu and Kashmir, have been booked for allegedly disrespecting the National Anthem by not standing when it was being played in a cinema hall, the Hyderabad police said.

Before the screening, hall owners as per Supreme Court guidelines played the national anthem, but the three Kashmiri youths kept sitting, said an officer with Rajendranagar police station.

The Indian Express reported that the Kashmiri students were released on bail after spending the night in jail. They said the national anthem began to play when they were still trying to settle, and they did not react immediately.

Following the complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971 against the trio and they were taken into custody. The students added that they were prompted by someone behind to stand up which they did afterwards. The boys claimed they were unaware the anthem had started, but the theatre manager stated that they were reluctant to stand up although several people around them indicated they should.

Though the complainant officially is the mall's management, the information about the students not standing up was sent to the police by a senior police officer who was present in the theatre.

The Police received a complaint on Sunday against them which mentions that they did not show respect by standing up, also made fun of other by laughing on the others in the theatre.
