Tamil Nadu CM EK Palaniswami declares probe over Jayalalithaa's death

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy on Thursday said his government will set up an inquiry commission to probe into former CM J Jayalalitha's death, media reports said.

Addressing the birth centenary celebrations of former chief minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran, Palaniswami said,"while at the national level it is only at 24.5%, in Tamil Nadu it is at 44.3%".

The rival faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, O Panneerselvam, welcomed the state government's move.

A Judicial probe into the "mystery" behind Jayalalithaa's death was one of the two prime demands made by the OPS faction and it was now fulfilled by the ruling party.

Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016 in a Chennai hospital after a prolonged illness.

Announcing the decision in a hurriedly convened press meet at the Secretariat, Palaniswami said the retired judge would be named soon.
