Bryce Harper does not have ligament or tendon damage

Baker, 68, has managed eight teams to the postseason but is still chasing his first ring as a skipper; his only pennant came with the 2002 Giants, who came so tantalizingly close before he took the ball from Russ Ortiz in Game 6 at Anaheim and watched the Angels brush past him that night and the next.

General manager Mike Rizzo said Harper has a "significant" bone bruise in his left knee but avoided the kind of ligament or tendon damage that would have put a pin in the team's World Series aspirations.

That's especially important considering Harper can be a free agent after the 2018 season, crystallizing Washington's championship window with Max Scherzer in his prime and a lineup built with power around the 29-year-old face of the franchise, Daniel Murphy, Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman. The 2015 NL MVP is 10-for-28 with two homers, seven RBIs and six runs scored in his last seven contests, but went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts during Washington's three-game sweep of San Francisco.

Bryce Harper injured his knee rounding first base Saturday night and had to be helped off the field. Washington doesn't have a lot of options, with 11 players now on the DL, which is tied for second-most in the majors (the Dodgers have 12).

QUIZ: Which Premier League manager are you?
I saw him on the TV last season, but it will depend on how he and the other players adjust to the Premier League. Brighton's last home game in the top flight was a 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on 7 May 1983.

Joe Panik hit a solo homer off Jackson in the first inning to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

It was easy to assume that Harper was gone for the season, and it was just as easy to start worry about when he would be back in 2018. Baker said he hopes that's not the case with Harper. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

"The good thing is he's young and strong", Baker said.
