Yankees' Tanaka goes on DL with shoulder inflammation

Yankees' Tanaka goes on DL with shoulder inflammation

Today it looks like they might not have enough.

Tanaka said Saturday his shoulder felt sore and exhausted toward the end of the Blue Jays game.

The Yankees starting rotation has suddenly become a MASH unit.

Girardi said that no tests had been performed on Tanaka's shoulder, but that team doctors had determined there was no structural damage. In his most recent start, Tanaka had allowed a leadoff home run to Jose Bautista and then a walk to Josh Donaldson, giving him a career-high five walks and prompting Girardi to remove him from the game.

The New York Yankees have sent both Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia to the disabled list in the past 24 hours, putting their rotation in flux as we approach the final month a half of the season. Montgomery will pitch Sunday's series finale with the Red Sox in Sabathia's stead. "From a strength standpoint he comes out fine", said Girardi before referring to a magnetic resonance imaging test.

Tanaka is in the fourth year of a seven-year $155 million contract that permits him to "opt-out" after this season.

Tanaka has struggled this season, going 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 23 starts.

Girardi said Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa are candidates to pitch in Tanaka's place.

This is the third time Tanaka has had to go on the disabled list. In 2015 he missed six weeks with a forearm strain. He added that he's frustrated to miss time but doesn't expect to be out long.

Elliott is appealing the suspension and could pursue other legal measures to get it reduced or overturned. He can play in preseason games and practice until September 2, regardless of the outcome of the appeal.
