Seven dead, over 20 missing in Himachal landslide

Over 50 passengers are feared dead after two buses belonging to the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation were swept away in a landslide in the Mandi district of the state during the early hours of Sunday. One of the buses was going from Manali to Katra and another from Manali to Chamba.

"The army and NDRF have been called while police, home guard and fire services have already been deployed in the rescue and relief operation", Kadam said.

Following the incident, the National Highway 21 from Mandi to Aut has been closed due to the threat of landslides.

Himachal Transport Minister GS Bali said that at least 50 are feared to have washed away. Director General of Police Somesh Goyal said eight passengers were travelling in the Manali-Katra bus while 47 passengers were in the other bus.

Six bodies were recovered from the site of the landslide.

Rescue workers were finding it hard to retrieve the remains of the Manali-bound bus as it rolled down 800 metres below the road and got stuck under a huge mound of debris.

The number of passengers in the buses could be between 30 and 40 as the number of passengers who boarded the bus en route was not known.

In another landslide reported on Saturday at Dwara on Chandigarh-Manali highway, two people were injured when the debris fell on a moving auto.
