North Korea tensions continue to weigh on global stocks


The remarks, following North Korea's earlier revelation of a plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, gave investors further incentive to take to the sidelines at least in stock markets.

Tillerson's tone was in sharp contrast to that of United States president Donald Trump, who warned on Tuesday any North Korean threat to the U.S. would be met with "fire and fury".

"Markets are looking for any reason at all for a reset".

S&P 500 e-minis were up 1.5 points, or 0.06 percent, with 300,073 contracts traded. The precious metal is often seen as a safe haven for investors during times of uncertainty.

The CBOE Volatility Index .VIX , a barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, closed at its highest since the US presidential election on Thursday, but was down 1.22 points at 14.82 points on Friday.

At 9:38 a.m. ET (1338 GMT) the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 85.43 points, or 0.39%, at 21 963.27, the S&P 500 was down 10.31 points, or 0.42% at 2 463.71.

Retailers' results are being keenly watched by investors to gauge the companies' strategy to counter No. 1 online retailer Amazon.com's growth.
