Marlins plan to sell to group that includes Jeter

The Miami Marlins signed an agreement to sell the team to a group featuring former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, a person familiar with the deal said Saturday. The group finalized a $1.2 billion purchase agreement with Loria on Friday and submitted it to the Major League Baseball office.

"I've gotten to know him through this process", Samson said.

The Sherman-Jeter group, which also includes former National Basketball Association great Michael Jordan, beat out a contingent led by Miami businessman Jorge Mas. If their bid is approved by baseball's owner's, the Jeter/Sherman ownership group will acquire a team with one of baseball's best power hitters, extremely low attendance numbers despite a garish home run sculpture and a stadium whose financing deal will cost the city of Miami billions of dollars in the future. After winning the World Series in 2004, the Marlins have won zero playoff series since then and have been in the cellar of the National League most of the time. It appears that Jeter and his group will have a chance to work on the roster all off-season long.
