Federer eases into Rogers Cup semis

It will raise his world ranking from 143rd to about 66th.

Zverev came out on top in the battle of the young guns.

Shapovalov spent much of the match alternating between errors and impressive winners, consistently fighting off break points on his serve.

World No.3 Federer secured the decisive first break against Bautista Agut in the ninth game of the opening set and then served out to take control of the match. It was the fourth time in five matches he lost the first set, but this time there was no coming back.

Shapovalov's dream run will now be put to the test by Alexander Zverev, who defeated Kevin Anderson for the second time in a week following their meeting in last Sunday's Citi Open final.

Federer said he knows Haase well from serving with him on the ATP player council and from practising together. "It was a good decision for me". I played in five finals this year. I came from vacation, did some fitness, saw how I was feeling and said, 'You know what, I practiced so much the past year, let's go play some matches'.

'This is how I want to play for the whole week.

Federer is looking for a third Rogers Cup title, but his first in Montreal, having won in 2004 and 2006 in Toronto. A victory would give Federer, now ranked third in the world, one of the top two seeds at the U.S. Open that begins August 28 in NY.

The 18-year-old Shapovalov, who needed a wild card to get into the tournament, continued his giant-killing form at the hard court tournament by rallying to beat Nadal in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) on Thursday. "I'm going to try and recover and enjoy the win today before preparing for tomorrow's match".

"I know I can't become number one here, I'm just playing Montreal for the tournament that it is, and I'm trying to win it for the first time in my career", Federer said.

"It's a huge opportunity for them".
