China Set To Intervene If US Launches Pre-Emptive Strike Against North Korea

In response to North Korea's second round of threats of "enveloping fire" around the US territory of Guam, US President Donald Trump ramped up his remarks Thursday, saying his recent warning that the US would retaliate with "fire and fury" may not have been tough enough for the reclusive state. China has called on South Korea and the suspend large scale military exercises in return for the North halting its programs in order to facilitate talks.

"North Korea aims to propel the USA to negotiate with it, while the U.S. wants to put North Korea in check". "The Secretary-General remains extremely concerned by the ongoing situation [on the Korean Peninsula] and is troubled by the increase in confrontational rhetoric [between North Korea and the US]", said Stéphane Dujarric, UN spokesperson, on August 9.

He added that the North's current actions and "what they've been getting away with" can not be further allowed.

On Aug. 9, American demonstrators in front of the White House in Washington called for peaceful negotiations with North Korea.
