30 children die in 48 hours in Gorakhpur hospital

An official spokesperson in home ministry in Delhi said that as per to the Gorakhpur superintendent of police (SP), 21 children died due to a shortage of oxygen supply.

The letter was written to the hospital authorities on August 3 and 10 informing them about the shortage of oxygen cylinders as the Pushpa Sales stopped supply over pending payment. The issue of settlement of the pending money is what costed the lives of little ones.

Minister for medical education Ashutosh Tandon ruled out disruption in oxygen supply as the reason behind the deaths. Later, the chief of the hospital was suspended by the Yogi goverment.

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday expressed her deep shock at the tragic death of children.

District Magistrate Rajiv Rautela said on Saturday that the deaths of the children in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state, were due to natural causes. The hospital has a special ward for patients of encephalitis.

Local officials have denied that the deaths are linked to a lack of oxygen supply.

According to the data procurred from the BRD hospital, in five days - from August 7 to August 11, a total of 60 deaths had occurred in the hospital.
