The vessel was not carrying any cargo, officials said.

The Coast Guard says the 629-foot (192-meter) US vessel named Calumet left a steel facility in Sault Ste. The plan, which included plans to offload ballast water and refloat the vessel, was approved.

Grand River Navigation Inc., the vessel's owner, submitted a salvage plan Friday afternoon to the Coast Guard's Salvage Engineering Response Team (SERT) for review.

Army Corps of Engineers surveyors will then look at the river bottom to make sure no debris is obstructing the channel.

Transit on the river is closed and so far, the ship is blocking 17 vessels from passage.

The Coast Guard conducted two aerial flights Thursday, one with an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Traverse City, and one later in the day by a Coast Guard Auxiliary Air Patrol.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported the 629-foot Calumet refloated quickly once work got underway, and it was moved to a designated anchorage downriver.

The cause is under investigation.
