Trump tells Calvo he's behind Guam

President Trump on Friday assured the governor of Guam that the White House is "with you 1,000 percent" in the face of a threat from North Korea - and then told the governor that he's becoming famous and predicted the attention would boost tourism "tenfold" in the us territory.

In a recorded phone call to Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo, the president tried to reassure the residents of the island, saying, "We are with you 1000 percent...."

North Korean military on Thursday said it would prepare a plan by mid-August to strike Guam, a United States island territory in the Western Pacific, with intermediate missiles.

Calvo answers, "as the governor of Guam representing the people of Guam and as an American citizen, I never felt more safe or confident than with you at the helm". Asked if the USA was going to war, he said cryptically, "I think you know the answer to that".

"And your tourism, I can say this, your tourism is going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you", Mr Trump said, praising the island's beauty, to which Mr Calvo encouraged Mr Trump to visit.

Despite Mr Trump's reassurances, Guam's security agency has issued a fact sheet with advice on what residents should do in the event of a nuclear attack.

"We are watching with concern because North Korean missiles are not exactly accurate", Lorenzana said in a mix of Filipino and English at the national defense headquarters in suburban Quezon City, Metro Manila.

Key Pyongyang ally Beijing, meanwhile, has pleaded with Trump to tone down his rhetoric to prevent tensions from boiling over.

North Korea says its Hwasong-12 missiles would take just 1,065 seconds to complete their 3,356km flight over Japan before splashing down in waters off the coast of Guam.
