Mattis says U.S. wants diplomatic solution for N. Korea

Deviating from the tone of President Trump, who said the US would unleash "fire and fury" upon North Korea, Mattis stressed that the route forward would be diplomatic, and he repeated the importance of the unanimous 15-1 United Nations Security Council vote to impose economic sanctions on North Korea.

Mattis said the tragedy of war is well-known and "it doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic".

The comments comes hours after neighbour China told both North Korea and the USA to be "cautious" with their words and actions. North Korea said it has drawn up plans to launch four missiles near the small island of Guam, a US territory and military hub.

"I don't tell the enemy in advance what we are going to do", he said, adding that in the event of an attack, "We are ready".
