Elmore County mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus

A person is in serious condition at a Manhattan hospital with West Nile virus, the first human case of the 2017 season, city health officials say.

The West Nile virus was first detected in New York City 18 years ago, and since 1999, the number of human cases has ranged from three to 47 annually.

"With confirmation that West Nile virus is in the community, everyone needs to follow the recommendations for protecting yourself from mosquito bites", said Adi Pour, the county's health director. Officials say they also found West Nile virus in a wild crow in northwestern New Castle County.

West Nile virus has made its way into Wilmington and west-central Kent County. In 2016, 95 West Nile cases and one West Nile-related death were reported.

State officials say two mosquito-borne viruses that carry potentially serious health risks for humans have been detected in so-called sentinel chickens in DE for the first time this year. While most people infected with the virus show no symptoms, some may have high fever, severe headache, tiredness and/or a stiff neck that can last several days to several weeks.

Mosquito surveillance programs are in place throughout the County. And to avoid being outside during the peak mosquito hours of dawn and dusk.
