However, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) says the eggs are "unlikely" to be a risk to public health when consumed in low doses.

Contaminated eggs were found in 15 European Union countries but not in Malta.

"The number of egg products imported is very small".

Instead, national authorities say the contaminated eggs were only circulated in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Denmark.

Dutch prosecutors announced Thursday that two people were arrested by a joint Belgian-Dutch task force related to the Fiprionil contamination on poultry farms. We have now established that more eggs from affected farms than previously identified came to the UK.

Around 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms implicated in a contamination scare have been distributed to Britain, rather than the 21,000 first estimated, the Food Standards Agency has said.

Some of the products the eggs went into will have a short shelf life so will have already been consumed, the FSA added.

Almost 250,000 eggs contaminated with an insecticide have reached shops in France and majority have already been eaten, the French farm ministry said on Friday, adding that it saw minimal health risks from the incident.

The British Egg Industry Council said consumers concerned about the safety of their food should look for British Lion eggs.

"The Centre for Food Safety is now inspecting eggs coming from Europe closely, no matter at the import, or at the retail level", Chan said.

While a large amount of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten to show negative health effects, fipronil is considered moderately toxic and can cause organ damage in humans.

Belgium earlier this week accused the Netherlands of knowing about the fipronil eggs since November 2016 and failing to notify other countries, a charge the Dutch have denied.

The eggs, coming mainly from the Netherlands, have been found with fipronil, an insecticide used to kill lice and ticks on animals that is banned by the EU.
