30 children die in Gorakhpur hospital, UP government says seven

In April, Adityanath government claimed that they have started working on setting up six AIIMS and 25 new medical colleges in UP.

The hospital is in chief minister Yogi Adityanath's constituency and he took stock of courses of action at the encephalitis wards two days prior during a visit.

In a shocking incident, eight children died of lack of oxygen in the Encephalitis ward of BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur on Thursday night raising a big question over the prevailing infrastructure in state-run hospitals. Singh accepted that there was a payment issue with the liquid oxygen supplier but added that there was no shortage of gas cylinders at the hospital, which were used as back-ups.

A statement issued by the state Information Department late evening categorically denied reports shown by "some TV channels as misleading".

Mritunjaya Singh, whose seven-month-old son was at the hospital but was not among the dead, said: "That's the time when the death of the children peaked".

Flanked by Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel and the state Health and Medical Education Ministers at a press conference, Adityanath asserted that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.

'Many acute cases are referred to the hospital and on an average 10-11 kids die daily.

Stressing that patients come to the hospital from neighbouring districts of the state, Bihar and even Nepal, he said, "like any other medical colleges in the country, these patients come in the last or final stages, as the first line of treatment centres are unable to treat them properly". He said that as the state government is responsible for the incident, compensation of Rs 20 lakh must be given to family of each child. Immediate action has been demanded by her against all those responsible for the terrible incident.

After digging deeper, it turns out that a total number of 60 deaths have occurred in the past 5 days.

District Magistrate Gorakhpur has also initiated Magisterial probe into the matter.

"There have been no deaths due to lack of oxygen supply", said Uttar Pradesh's medical education minister, Ashutosh Tondon.

Adityanath said, "The oxygen supply was low for about two hours, but the BRD Medical College had a system that beeped about it and after which the oxygen pressure was pumped manually".
