Jennings had battled hard for 48 when he was caught in the gully after fending at a lifting ball from fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. With lbw not an option as a result, it also meant the issue of whether Jennings had got an edge could not be considered.

The White Sox will also send cash considerations to Kansas City as part of the deal. Cabrera is making $15 million this season and will become a free agent after this season.

Cabrera, 32, is batting.295 with a.336 on-base percentage and 13 homers in 98 games for the White Sox. At 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, he is averaging 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings this season. He was selected by the Royals in the eighth round of the 2015 amateur draft. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Puckett has allowed two runs or less 10 times in 2017, and is 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA over his last five starts.
