United States investigators seek to turn Manafort in Russian Federation probe

The Senate Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena on Monday night to compel former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort's appearance at a public hearing on Wednesday.

Both Manafort and Kushner have faced scrutiny about attending a June 2016 meeting with Russian officials at the Trump Tower in NY because it was described in e-mails to the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., as part of a Russian government effort to aid Trump's presidential campaign. While Trump and Manafort will be cooperating with the committee, the statement adds that the panel "reserve [s] the right" to issue subpoenas for each in the future. In a joint statement, Senators Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein also said they are negotiating with Mr. Trump Jr. and Mr. Manafort about possibly turning over documents.

Critics have nevertheless seized on the meeting and charged that it showed Trump Jr. was willing to accept help from someone purporting to have information connected to the Russian government to help his father's presidential campaign. The firm used former MI-6 agent Christopher Steele to research Trump, information that would compose the infamous dossier that began circulating during campaign season and was brought to the attention of President Obama and President-elect Trump by the intelligence community in January.

That's according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak on the record.

Trump himself has publicly challenged Mueller, declaring this week that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director would be crossing a line if he investigated the president's personal business ties.

Kushner later told reporters "I did not collude with Russian Federation", and that he didn't know anyone in the campaign who did. USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation sought to tip the 2016 campaign in Trump's favor.

Trump also maintains there was no collusion with Russian Federation.

Word of the negotiations with Trump Jr. and Manafort comes as the president's legal team evaluates potential conflicts of interest among members of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

The House intelligence committee announced last week that it will interview Kushner on Tuesday as part of its probe into Russia's meddling into the 2016 election. He acknowledged four meetings with Russians during and after Trump's victorious White House bid.

Kushner said that when Kislyak asked if there was a secure way for him to provide information from his "generals", Kushner suggested using facilities at the Russian Embassy.
