UK poised to ban diesel, petrol cars by 2040

New diesel and petrol cars and vans will be banned from 2040 as part of efforts to tackle air pollution, the Government is expected to announce.

The Air Quality Plan will reportedly put £1bn towards the development of ultra-low-emission vehicles, including nearly £100m to support the UK's electric vehicle charging infrastructure and to fund the "plug-in car" and "plug-in grant" subsidy schemes.

The timetable for councils to come up with initial plans has been cut from 18 months to eight, with the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) wanting to "inject additional urgency" into the process.

Local councils will be provided with up to £3 billion in new funding "to clean up dirty air on roads", according to a government spokesperson.

The EU set a deadline for the government to outline how it will tackle the issue: today's announcement aims to do that with just days to spare.

Areeba Hamid, the clean air campaigner at Greenpeace, added: "The high court was clear that the government must bring down toxic air pollution in the United Kingdom in the shortest possible time".

The government's air quality plans have divided opinion.

A targeted scrappage scheme for older diesel vehicles is also being considered, but it won't be ratified until after a consultation period.

The UK became the latest European country to mark the end of the line for diesel and gasoline fueled cars as automakers such as Volvo race to build electric vehicles or face the consequences of getting left behind.

No new petrol or diesel auto will be sold beyond 2040 with Brits expected to fork out for electric or hybrid vehicles.

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump said he had made the decision "after consultation with my generals and military experts". Service members must be diagnosed as stable in their preferred gender for 18 months before they can receive treatment.

Because diesel vehicles give out higher levels of CO2, an incentivised scrappage scheme may be introduced to compensate drivers trading in for an electric vehicle, but any such plans won't be announced for some time.

A plan for a Government-led "scrappage scheme" - to get diesel cars off Britain's roads quickly - has been rejected as poor value for money, it emerged.

"I don't believe that it is necessary to bring in charging, but we will work with local authorities in order to determine what the best approach is".

It is a "revolution" but "the conditions are in place", declared France's minister for ecological transition Nicolas Hulot as he announced France's plan to end fossil fueled vehicle sales. The Government's clean air strategy lumps petrol and diesel cars - and hybrids for that matter - as equally guilty when it comes to air pollution.

Russian Federation vows to retaliate over new U.S. sanctions
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said the US isn't entitled to tell European companies how to do business with a third country, but the legislation has improved from the original proposal.

Responding on behalf of local authorities, Councillor Martin Tett, Local Government Association environment spokesman, said: "Councils want to switch their focus from simply monitoring air quality to improving air quality".
