Islamic centre destroyed in 'arson attack' in Manchester

A suspected arson attack has taken place at a mosque in Manchester, which has previously been the target of other attacks.

Nasfat (Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fathi Society of Nigeria) opened up in Manchester as a mosque and Islamic centre in 2009 and it has about 300 members.

Fire investigators say the cause of the blaze is unknown but arson cops have been assigned to the case.

A GMP spokeswoman said it was carrying out a joint investigation with Greater Manchester Fire Service. We sent five pumps to the scene and an investigation is now underway'.

Oladimeji went on to say "it has been seriously damaged. We try to be good neighbours and we try to be involved with our local community", said mosque spokesperson Shamusideen Oladimeji.

Crews were called to the Manchetser Nasfat Islamic Centre at about 11.40pm on Sunday with 30 firefighters battling the flames.

Flames appeared to come out of the roof and lit up the sky and surrounding buildings. The official added there was no one inside the centre at the time.

Monsurat Adebanjo-Aremu, the mosque secretary, said that in the past year somebody had thrown two pigs' heads inside the building and urinated outside.
