IIFA Awards 2017: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt win top awards

NEW YORK-In a city that never sleeps, the Metlife Stadium came alive with the IIFA Awards celebration here on Saturday night, with Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt becoming proud winners of the Best Actor trophies for their remarkable work in "Udta Punjab". Neerja received the best film of the year award while the best direction award went to Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury for his much-acclaimed film "Pink", a female-centric court room drama.

Amit Mishra bagged Best Playback Singer (Male) award for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil while Kanika Kapoor Tulsi Kumar jointly won the Best Playback Singer (Female) award for Udta Punjab and Airlift respectively. IIFA will be exclusively aired live on Colors channel on July 16. He was given the best actor male award. Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Varun Dhawan were a part of the grand event.

Neerja won the award for Best Film while AnirudhRoy Chaudhary won Best Director award for Pink. Shakun Batra and Ayesha DeVitre won the award for the Best Story for Kapoor & Sons.

Both Shahid and Alia were emotional about winning the award for a film which made its way to the big screen after fighting the censor board, and let mainstream performers like them take up something risky.

Salman and Katrina are also attending the glitzy awards show where the latter will also celebrate her birthday on 16th July. Besides Salman and Katrina's epochal pairing, the film elicits euphoria as it promises to be an adrenaline-pumping actioner.


"Udta Punjab" revolves around the issue of drug crisis in the state of Punjab. Actor Jim Sarbh won the Best Performance in a Negative role for the movie.

In the Best Supporting Actor class, Shabana Azmi and Anupam Kher were respected for 'Neerja" and "M.S. Dhoni"; Varun Dhawan also awarded for his comic in "Dishoom"; and Disha Patani awarded with honor for her picture "M.S. Dhoni: "The Untold Story".
