Police declined to comment, while an action group of Uber drivers told local news website enca.com that the victim was targeted in a "turf war between Uber and metre-taxi drivers".

Teresa Leslie-Munchick, spokesperson for the two groups (called The Movement), said Uber vehicles were under attack "almost on a daily basis" by meter taxis.

"Those vehicles are not licensed to operate in certain areas and it gives the impression that Uber drivers can do as they wish", he said.

Metered taxis drivers claim their Uber rivals have become a law unto themselves and is calling on government to stop them from operating in South Africa.

News24 understands that dozens of cases of malicious damage to property have been opened by both Uber and meter taxi drivers in recent months after their vehicles have been stoned, petrol bombed or set alight.

Uber has hired private security to protect drivers and customers at violent hot spots such as the Gautrain station in Sandton in northern Johannesburg, Jonathan Ayache, the service's general manager in the country, said on Johannesburg-based broadcaster Talk Radio 702 Monday.

"The police have not been helpful at all and we chose to start the petition because we need the public's help", she said. "We have requested an urgent meeting with the Police Minister and the Minister of Transport to resolve this situation and we are still waiting for their response", she said.
