The Post did not identify the intelligence officials it spoke to for the report.

The authenticity of the report is also questioned when readers know that the report only repeated rumours originally published by the Al Jazeerah television station and its offshot media outlets, funded by Qatar.

Al Jazeera's Heidi Zhou-Castro, reporting from Washington, DC, said this is new information and the US Department of State has yet to officially respond. The United Arab Emirates' foreign minister has hotly denied that his government was responsible for the alleged hack of a Qatari state news agency which helped spark the current diplomatic crisis enveloping the Gulf.

The officials said it was unclear if the UAE hacked the websites or paid for them to be carried out, the newspaper reported. However, the remarks were reported across the region and caused a stir.

The comments prompted the Saudi-led bloc to ban all Qatari media before ultimately severing ties with Doha. Qatar vehemently denies all the allegations against it.

Qatari government spokesperson Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed Al-Thani said at the time the postings were false and the result of a hack by an "unknown entity".

His visit had yielded little except for a bilateral agreement between the United States and Qatar to fight "terrorism".

"You can not be both our friend and a friend of al-Qaeda".

Mr Gargash told the BBC that Qatar's denial had been contradicted by its agreement to review a list of 59 individuals and 12 organisations who the UAE has accused of supporting terrorism and wants arrested or expelled.

Qatar rejected the demands, insisting that the list was so draconian that it was created to be turned down.
