Russian foreign minister calls seizure of U.S. compounds 'daylight robbery'

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "We consider it absolutely unacceptable to place conditions on the return of diplomatic property, we consider that it must be returned without any conditions and talking".

Then-US President Barack Obama ordered the seizure of two Russian diplomatic compounds and kicked out 35 diplomats from the country in response to alleged Kremlin hacking of the US election in 2016.

It has said a lot will depend on the outcome of a meeting in Washington later on Monday between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon.

The White House has faced a maelstrom of United States investigations into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

A senior White House official told Sputnik on Monday that the properties, seized in December 2016 over Russia's alleged interference in the U.S. election, would be given back only under the condition that it receives something in return from Moscow.

Peskov said any USA preconditions to return the property would be unacceptable for Moscow and said Washington's failure to hand back the compounds ran counter to worldwide law. "We believe that it must be returned without any preconditions, without any talks, because what is happening de facto and de jure is a flagrant violation of worldwide law".

USA intelligence services believe Russian Federation ordered cyber attacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Hillary Clinton's campaign and other political organizations, in an attempt to influence the election in favor of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.
