PayPal partners Samsung Pay

PayPal partners Samsung Pay

Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it has clinched a strategic partnership with US online payment service provider PayPal for an expansion of its mobile payment services. Sanjay Razdan, director, Samsung Pay Business, Samsung India, said, "We are enthused by the tremendous response Samsung Pay has received since its launch, both from our consumers as well as partners". Samsung Pay will also work online and in apps via PayPal's Braintree Direct, or at least it theoretically can. Since Samsung's mobile payments service has MST and NFC support, it can work with nearly all card terminals in supported markets.

That said, Samsung Pay is not yet one of the most-used payment technologies in the US, according to recent data. It, however, does not support tap-and-pay using credit and debit cards like the main app.

USA customers will receive the payment option now through an update, and Samsung hopes to spread the service to further geographic markets soon. Samsung says that it will roll out support for Samsung Pay users in other markets in the coming weeks. More than 200 million people use PayPal.

"Samsung Pay in partnership with PayPal will provide more abundant mobile wallet experiences to users", said Rhee In-jong, Samsung Mobile's chief technology officer.
